It Starts with me Taking Responsibility

“Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.” — Leo Tolstoy

Change happens whether we like it or not and regardless of whether we do anything about it. Tomorrow will be different than today. We can resist, but that is a bit like standing in a river and trying to hold back the water – useless. We have a choice to watch change passively happening around us, or to participate and lead it.

Intellectually we all accept the value of change, but we are not so ebullient when it comes down to us being the one who must change. In order to make change at any level of “stuckness,” you have to identify a small action you can take and from there gain momentum. Anyone, anywhere, can start an initiative of change by applying the words of Mahatma Gandhi: Be the change you want to see in the world. If you want to see an end to corruption, start by being scrupulously honest yourself. If you want to see peace in the world, start within your own family. If you care about the environment, start looking at your own patterns of consumption and waste. Start, but don't stop there. If we can all just realize that we are responsible for our lives and that we are capable of creating such amazing relationships that give our lives meaning, then we won’t have to accept the mediocrity we have been living.

Too often people allow the past circumstances to determine the future outcome without realizing that the only power that the past has over the future is the power that we give it. Our generation has great potential to reach and impact the world around us but this won't happen as long as our eyes are looking down -- fixed to our phones, our shoes, and only to ourselves. If we want to make a difference in our family, our school, and the world, then it starts with us looking up. Change starts within ourselves. Change starts within me. I'll take responsibility for the  person I am today and trust that God will provide me with all the need to become the person He is calling me to be.

“All meaningful and lasting change starts on the inside and works its way out.” ~Anonymous.

The biggest change will often have to come in how we view things – how we perceive the world is treating us, how hard done by we are, how unfair life is! So, the next time you want something to change, look inside yourself and determine what it is about you that must change. Start there first! You are the only force that can create the change you seek, and you can only do that after you accept things as they are.

Expression of Opinion

Dear Mr. President, To formally start my message, I would like to greet you a good day, all the way from Ilocos Sur. Being a President is a huge responsibility. The stake of the Philippines depend under your leadership. I would like to convey my opinion regarding your governance, including your campaign against illegal drugs. Many people wish that you will be impeached because they dislike your supremacy but as a matter of fact, you are better than those they favor to be on your position. You are a good leader but some people choose to be blinded by your negative actions. Instead of helping you avoid mistakes, they wait for you to commit one. Though there really are reasons to be against you. Your campaign against illegal drugs took away the lives of people that may still have room for change and even those who are innocent. While you are eradicating one of the roots of crime, you are violating human rights also. Second, isn't it odd for a person reigning on a pedestal to be sp...

The City Never Sleeps

July 23, 2018, Mr. Rodrigo Roa Duterte delivered his State of the Nation Address. The President's SONA this year was not as long as his previous ones but he was able to point out unfixed issues and campaigns he desires to implement.            I don't hold any grudge against the President but to  convey complaint  on a particular statement from his SONA is not a sin, is it?  " Your concern is human rights, mine is human lives " is unpleasing to the ears. Mr. Duterte is framing our mutual concerns that it seemed to contradict. You can't totally support human lives without supporting human rights. Human rights is the right to life and the right to live. Its point is to protect lives. From the idea I deducted from his statement, it's as if our concerns are different from each other. He claims to be concerned on human lives when in fact, he is the root of death abundance in the the country he leads. Human lives su...

Reflection

It is a will of mine to learn, not just to listen to our teacher as she speaks in front of our class without understanding any word she says. It wasn't too hard to absorb the topics we discussed -except for some- especially that the teachers had their own strategies in teaching that made the discussions flow easily. Being on my last year in junior high, I need to be more attentive than usual.       Although discussions were light, there were challenges I faced throughout the whole quarter. I found it hard not to be tempted to chitchat with my seatmate while we were having discussions. I had to sleep late at night in doing our requirements even on other subjects so I felt sleepy at times. There were also rough moments where frustration almost ate me when I couldn't think of other ideas to give more life to my articles. I got torn between having to give negative or positive comments to the President. There would also be times when I'd be think ...
